ARCHIVED - Old public telephone booths to be removed in Lorca
The disused booths have become an eyesore and even a danger in Lorca
The Councillor for Urban Planning of the Lorca City Council, José Luis Ruiz Guillén, has reported that the Telefónica phone company plans to dismantle the now defunct public telephone booths dotted throughout the municipality.
According to the councillor, 21 telephone booths in total will be removed as part of a national plan to improve the appearance of Spain’s streets.
Mr Ruiz Guillén added that "the abandonment of the use of these booths, given the proliferation of mobile telephones in recent years, has meant that they often become unsightly elements that disfigure public spaces, even representing, in some cases, a danger for pedestrians due to glass breakage and other dangerous elements”.
Once Telefónica has removed the old booths, the council plans to address the unsightly telephone wires that crisscross the historic centre and deface many of the building facades, by burying as many as possible underground.
