ARCHIVED - One dead and five injured in Torre Pacheco road accident
The head-on collision occurred on the road between El Jimenado and Torre Pacheco
A road accident described in the Murcia regional press as “brutal” left one person dead and five more injured in the municipality of Torre Pacheco on Saturday night, when a lorry belonging to the municipal waste collection services was involved in a head-on collision with a car on the RM-F14 road between El Jimenado and the town of Torre Pacheco itself.
The car is reported to have been travelling on the wrong carriageway when the accident occurred at around 23.00 near the Rambla de La Señora, and the lorry also spun out of control and turned over as the two vehicles collided. The mortal victim was the lorry driver, a 61-year-old man who was on his way from Los Alcázares to the waste treatment plant in Ulea, while inside the car were a 61-year-old couple, their two children and the girlfriend of one of them.
The married couple and one of the children were admitted to the intensive care unit of the Los Arcos hospital in San Javier and the other son was kept in overnight under observation.
The incident reflects the danger on the rural roads of Torre Pacheco, where local Mayor Antonio León states that numerous requests have been made over the last ten years for the RM-F14 to be widened along a 10-kilometre stretch. This and other actions in the municipality, he says, would require an investment on the part of the regional government of at least 10 million euros.
Sr León reports that apart from the RM-F14, other danger spots include the RM-F26 between Camachos and Los Alcázares, where work is already under way, and the RM-F336 between Torre Pacheco and La Palma.
