ARCHIVED - One dead and two injured in two crashes on the A-31 Montforte El Cid
A van collided with the wreckage of a car which had crashed minutes earlier at kilometre 222 of the motorway in Monforte del Cid, Alicante province

A 40-year-old man has died in a crash on the A-31 in Monforte del Cid and two occupants of a second vehicle which collided with the wreckage have been injured.
The first smash occurred at around 2.50am on Thursday January 13 at kilometre 222 of the motorway, though the circumstances are not clear.
According to the Emergency Information and Coordination Centre (CICU), which mobilised police and medical teams to the scene, 10 minutes after the first crash, a second vehicle travelling in the direction of Villena collided with the wreckage, and two people aged 31 and 41-years-old were mildly hurt to varying degrees.
Medics managed to stablise the driver of the first car at the scene after performing advanced cardiopulmonary resuscitation and other recovery techniques, but he tragically died of multiple trauma at Elda General Hospital shortly afterwards.
The occupants of the van were treated for dizziness and a bruised knee.
