ARCHIVED - One migrant dead and another injured after attempting to climb up rocky cliff in Almeria
The rocky area in Carboneras, Andalucía, was inaccessible to the Maritime Rescue boat and firefighters had to be called in
Civil Protection services in Carboneras, Almería found an injured irregular immigrant along with the lifeless body of another migrant in the early hours of Sunday morning, September 12.
Andalucía emergency services received a phonecall at around 5.50am from a member of the public who had seen an immigrant boat, or patera, with two men who appeared to be injured aboard.
The small boat was in a dangerous rocky area which was innaccesible to Maritime Rescue services and the migrants had unsuccessfully attempted to climb up a cliff on Playa de los Muertos, resulting in one of the passengers sustaining a serious head wound while the other had injured his arm.
One of the migrants, with less serious injuries, was able to swim for help, alerting the authorities about his fellow passenger’s critical condition, but due to the dangerous water conditions and surrounding rocks, Maritime Rescue had to call the provincial firefighters to extract the second migrant.
Unfortunately, the seriously injured irregular immigrant was pronounced dead at 8.20am, while the second man was taken to Puerto de Carboneras to receive medical attention.
According to 112 Andalucía, the deceased migrant could be underage and the Guardia Civil has activated the necessary judicial protocol for these kinds of incidents.
