ARCHIVED - Aguilas opens new Cabo Cope footpath
The path is named after the Aguilas victim of the Germanwings crash
The PR-MU 104 footpath and hiking route at Cabo Cope was officially opened on Sunday and was named in honour of Fernando Martínez Rubio, the resident of Águilas who lost his life on board the Germanwings flight which crashed in the French Alps last year and who was a great fan of the headland.
Present at the inauguration ceremony were friends and relatives of Sr Martínez, including his widow, as well as dignitaries from the Town Hall, and the group set off along the path as soon as the information board next to the Torre de Cope had been unveiled. All of them completed the climb up to the Llano de la Cabrica, although some of those present on Sunday opted to continue up to the top of the headland.
The PR-MU 104 also takes walkers to Cabo Cope from Calabardina, and at the top of the climb four benches and a plaque in memory of Fernando Martínez have been installed. Along the way are various information boards in both Spanish and English, helping visitors to learn about the geological, cultural, environmental and historical importance of Cabo Cope.
