ARCHIVED - Outrage after 18th Century building is pulled down to make way for a supermarket in Moraira
Casa de Sant Vicent is considered "one of the last historical strongholds" in the Alicante town in the Marina Alta
The demolition of an 18th Century property with a fortified tower to make way for a supermarket in Moraira has sparked outrage amongst conservationists who have blasted the move as "heritage crime".
Casa de Sant Vicent, given its name because it was adorned with ceramic panels dedicated to the saint, had previously been converted into a restaurant and was considered "one of the last historical strongholds of the town", according to Salvem la Teulada gótica emmurallada, a platform focused on the preservation of Moraira's heritage which has condemned the demolition on social networks.
The plot of land is situated in what's known as the Rambla area next to a roundabout with access to Moraira centre, Poble Nou and Teulada, and was "very visible to all from the road". The property was once owned by wealthy families in Moraira and "survived" severe flooding having been built slightly elevated on a small hill.
And now locals are devastated the centuries-old estate has been demolished and "another" supermarket will be built in its place.
Demanding answers from the Town Hall through its social networks, Salvem questioned "who has allowed this heritage crime" and asked for explanations from the Councillor of Works and Urbanism, who is also the Councillor of Culture, Héctor Morales.
The conservationists want to know which municipal architect gave the demolition licence, whether it was approved by the Mayor, Rául Llobell, and why the property was not protected.
"These are unanswered questions, but we will work to find out and don't intend to leave things like this," added Salvem.
The platform also plans to approach the Valencia Government's culture department to "investigate the ins and outs of the demolition".
There has been no official statement from the Town Hall and it's not clear which supermarket will be built on the historic plot.
