ARCHIVED - Over 20 million employed in Spain for first time since 2008
Unemployment in Spain fell by 3.6% in the third quarter of this year
The number of people in the unemployment line fell by a further 3.6% in the third quarter of 2021, meaning that 127,100 people secured new jobs in the three-month period, according to data released by the Labour Force Survey (EPA) on Thursday October 28.
So far this year, the total number of unemployed people has fallen by 8.2%, an unprecedented decline that is moving ever closer to the drop of 10.9% in pre-pandemic 2019.
There are currently 3,416,700 people still looking for work in Spain, a figure that represents 14.6% of the entire workforce. By age, unemployment has decreased the most among those under the age of 55, with 326,100 people between 25 and 53 returning to work in the third quarter. However, in the older age brackets, unemployment has increased by 118,200.
For the first time since the global recession hit in 2008, the number of employed people, being either contracted or self-employed, has exceeded 20 million. There are now 20,031,000 people working in this country, a figure which the Minister of Economic Affairs claims shows that Spain’s economy is recovering with “unprecedented speeds”.
The sectors which have generated the most new jobs so far this year are the service industry, followed far behind by construction, industry and agriculture.
Despite the vigorous recovery of the labour market, the vast majority of contracts offered in Spain continue to be temporary ones, representing 63% of the total.
As the coronavirus pandemic slowly loosens its grip, Spain has seen an upsurge in face-to-face work also. Last quarter, only 8% of those employed were working from home more than half the week, a figure that has fallen by 1.4% compared with the second quarter.
