ARCHIVED - Pioneering mobile app launched for Malaga’s Gran Senda hiking route
The 850-kilometre-long trail is split into 35 stages and visits 59 different municipalities in Andalusia’s Málaga province.
Málaga Provincial Council has presented a new app, the first of its kind in Spain, specifically designed for use on the Gran Senda (GR-249) hiking route that travels around the province.
The mobile app, available for Android and iOS devices, employs augmented reality and GPS to enable users to access a wealth of information and track their routes in advance. Once on the trails, hikers can use symbols placed on 4,800 markers and 60 information panels along the way to make sure they are on track and to access further details on their route. The app avoids common connection issues in the mountains, where internet signal is often weak or non-existent, by using GPS.
The Gran Senda initiative was launched by the provincial authorities in 2013 to boost active and environmental tourism and sport, generate employment and introduce visitors to Málaga's rich historical and cultural heritage and gastronomy.
The trail is used by more than two million hikers a year and covers a total of 850 kilometres in 35 stages and five variants, visiting 59 municipalities and crossing four natural parks, two nature reserves and five nature sites.
