ARCHIVED - Police seize high-end drugs boat out to sea off coast of Granada
Officers from the Guardia Civil have seized a high-speed drugs boat off the coast of Gibraltar.
As part of a long-standing crackdown on drug trafficking between north Africa and Spain, police from the Guardia Civil Maritime Service have arrested four men on suspicion of trafficking and confiscated a high-end boat allegedly used to transport drugs.
The arrests took place when police spotted the 12-metre long semi-rigid boat round 16.5 miles out to sea off Castillo de Baños in Granada.
When the four men on board noticed police, they reportedly threw 41 cans of fuel overboard to speed up their escape. Officers say they later found the cans floating out to sea around 12 miles off La Rabita.
The type of boat which the men used to tried to escape police is prohibited by law since they are often used for drugs crimes and police arrested the four suspects, aged between 25 and 29, for trafficking.
Earlier this week police seized 7 tonnes of hashish after boarding a drugs boat in the Straits of Gibraltar.
