ARCHIVED - Prehistoric archaeological site in Almeria hosts Archery and Spear Throwing Contest
The Los Millares site in Andalucía dates back over 5,000 years to the Bronze Age
The inauguration of the second edition of the Provincial Circuit of Archery and Prehistoric Spear Throwing recently took place in Almería, in the historic archaeological site of Los Millares.
Around 60 participants of all ages took part in the contest which combines sporting competition and cultural and historic activities, showcasing the rich history of the Almería province while participants demonstrate their archery and spear throwing skills.
The Los Millares site is located in the municipality of Santa Fe de Mondújar and is widely recognized as one of the most important in Europe due to its 5,000 years of history. The prehistoric village was constructed in the Bronze Age (3200-2200 B.C.) and extended between six and 13 hectares.
In 2020, scientists and archaeologists proved that this settlement was the first to be established on the Ibearian Peninsula. The inhabitants of Los Millares over 5,000 years ago were the first to introduce the use of bronze in the western Mediterranean, as well as having an abundant agricultural and hunting culture.
Following the first contest of the Provincial Circuit of Archery and Prehistoric Spear Throwing in the historic site, the next competitions are set to take place in Benahadux (September 19), Pechina (September 26), Gádor (October 31) and Rioja (November 7), for anyone interested in witnessing millennium-old hunting techniques first-hand.
