ARCHIVED - Railway link between Alicante-Elche airport and the city of Alicante to be debated in Congress
The important infrastructure is included in the already approved Torrellano project
The absence of a railway connection between the Alicante-Elche airport and the city of Alicante is once again the topic of debate in the Deputies Congress and the political party Compromís has requested that the regional ministry of Transport carry out the Torrellano project, which includes this connection, as soon as possible.
The project has already been processed and approved, but work on the important infrastructure between the airport and the main city in the province has not yet started.
Compromís have asked for the railway to be included in the General State Budget for 2021 and 2022 and for the building work to be started without further delay.
The Torrellano project also includes the renovation and rehabilitation of the southern seafront in Alicante, but this building project is not scheduled to take place for another decade, according to the ministry’s current plans.
A representative from Compromís has stated that they will continue to request the railway connection until it is built, as they consider it to be vital to the tourism sector, as well as increasing global connectivity in the province of Alicante.
Alicante-Elche airport has ranked among the top twenty airports in Europe in passenger volume prior to the covid crisis, which is why it is so surprising that the airport still does not have a direct railway link to the capital city in the province, an infrastructure which will help to ensure greater volumes of both traffic and tourists in the future.
