Ramonete road in Lorca set to reopen after emergency repair works

ARCHIVED ARTICLE -

The final touches are underway on a €600,000 restoration project following storm damage last March

Ramonete road in Lorca set to reopen after emergency repair works
Emergency repair works on the RM-D20 road in Lorca are nearing completion, with the regional government announcing that the five-kilometre stretch between El Garrobillo and Ramonete is expected to reopen in the coming days.

The road was closed on March 1, 2025 due to heavy rains that destabilised several slopes and posed a safety risk to road users.

The works, which have required an investment of €600,000, have been carried out across four key sections between kilometre points 2.8 and 7.8. They have focused on reinforcing breakwater walls, repairing eroded drainage systems, and unloading built-up earth trapped behind protective mesh. Cleaning of roadside ditches and removal of debris are now being finalised to allow for safe passage once the road reopens.

Jorge García Montoro, Murcia’s regional Councillor for Development and Infrastructures, inspected the progress alongside Lorca’s mayor, Fulgencio Gil. García Montoro praised the rapid response, saying the work had been completed “with maximum speed” to minimise disruption and restore vital local connectivity.

The road will be ready to reopen before the end of this week, according to Lorca City Council sources.

García Montoro also highlighted the broader impact of recent storms, stating that the regional government has invested more than €2.8 million of its own funds to repair damaged roads across municipalities including Cehegín, Moratalla, Cartagena and Campos del Río.

“That money could be invested in other infrastructures to improve the lives of citizens if the central government would do the necessary containment works to protect against flooding,” García Montoro said.

The repair works form part of the Region of Murcia’s broader strategy to protect infrastructure from climate-related threats. The Ministry of Development and Infrastructures is implementing its ‘Plan for adaptation to climate change of roads against the risk of flooding’, which aims to mitigate the effects of extreme weather on the regional road network. This includes measures to safeguard pavements and prevent flood-related damage to road surfaces.
