ARCHIVED - Red Cross distributes food to thousands of vulnerable families in Almeria
More than 21,000 disadvantaged people will benefit from the food hampers in Andalucía
The Red Cross has begun distributing 637,415 kilos of food to 21,510 vulnerable people throughout the province of Almería, an initiative that will provide direct aid to some 8,053 at-risk families. This is the second phase of the 2021 Food Aid Program which has been launched through the Spanish Agrarian Guarantee Fund (FEGA).
Through organisations in Adra, Vera, Almería and 67 other bases, the Red Cross aims to deliver basic but highly nutritious food that can be easily transported and has a relatively long shelf-life. The aid hampers include such items as olive oil, rice, tuna, chickpeas, UHT milk, canned vegetables and fruit and baby food.
In addition to this program, which receives 85% of its finance from the Fund for European Aid to the Most Disadvantaged (FEAD), the Red Cross is running several other initiatives aimed at meeting the basic needs of vulnerable families. As well as food, the charitable organisation provides toiletries to disadvantaged groups and offers so-called ‘purse cards’ which families can exchange in various commercial establishments for high-quality produce.
Unsurprisingly, given the enormous financial impact of the coronavirus pandemic in 2020, demand for food aid from the Red Cross was five times greater than the previous year, and the charity receives much of its funding from local companies and institutions intent on alleviating the burden on the vulnerable.
