ARCHIVED - Region of Murcia has highest eviction rate in the country
Murcia also tops the leaderboard for foreclosure lawsuits during 2021
The economic effects of the coronavirus pandemic have been felt across the globe, and the Region of Murcia is no exception, as recent data reveals that the autonomous community has the highest eviction rate due to unpaid mortgages in the country even as the number of evictions drop nationally.
In the courts, the consequences from the Covid-19 crisis have led to the Region of Murcia having the highest number of foreclosure lawsuits per 100,000 inhabitants, in the entire country; according to the data from the General Council of the Judiciary (CGPJ), in the second quarter of this year, the Murcian courts dealt with 32.9 of these cases for every 100,000 inhabitants.
The figure in Murcia is followed by the Comunidad Valenciana, with 25.3 per 100,000 inhabitants, and Catalonia, with 20.5. Specifically, the number foreclosure proceedings in the region between April and June was around 500; 83.2% more than the previous year.
However, comparing 2021 figures with 2020 is of little use as, at the onset of the pandemic, most judicial activity in Spain was paralysed, but compared to data over the past seven years, the first few months of 2021 show a definitive increase compared to the steady decline in foreclosures since the record figures of 2014.
In addition, the Region not only ranks high in foreclosure proceedings, but also in eviction rate for non-payment of a mortgage. In just three months, there were 247 of these evictions, an average of more than two each day. And, with a rate of 16.3 mortgage evictions per 100,000 inhabitants, the Region ranks as the most affected community in Spain.
Similarly, between April and June there were up to 350 evictions from leased property due to non-payment of rent. Although Murcia doesn’t rank top in this category, the region still takes fourth place, with a rate of 23.1 per 100,000 inhabitants, after the Balearic Islands (26.2), the Canary Islands (25.8) and Catalonia (24.5).
Murcia also ranks fourth in residents filing for bankrupcy between April and June; 6.8 per 100,000 inhabitants.
