ARCHIVED - Rojales cancels Moors and Christian festival due to high incidence of Covid
This is the second time the Vega Baja town has been forced to suspend the popular festivities due to the pandemic
The continued rise in infections across Alicante province has forced Rojales to cancel its annual Moors and Christian festival for the second year running.
The decision was made following a meeting between the Rojales Town Council's Department of Festivities and the Central Board of Moors and Christians in Rojales, on January 25.
In a joint statement, the Town Hall and Central Board of Moors and Christians confirmed: "By common agreement, it has been concluded that the priority, in the current circumstances, is the health of our residents and visitors, and that all the measures within our reach must be adopted.
"It has been a difficult decision, given that this is the second year that we have had to suspend this festival, but we are aware of the great responsibility of doing everything in our power to stop the spread of the virus.
"We are confident that next year we will be able to enjoy the festivities in a better situation and ask for the public's understanding and support over this difficult decision, because the most fundamental thing is to ensure the welfare of all."
Last week, Orihuela Town Hall announced the cancellation of its three-day traditional medieval market, scheduled for February, due to an "avalanche" of new infections.
