ARCHIVED - San Pedro del Pinatar joins Un Arbol Por Europa sustainability campaign
By planting three olive trees in the municipality, the Town Hall aims to draw attention to the importance of local sustainability
The Town Hall in San Pedro del Pinatar has joined the European initiative “Un árbol por Europa”, and the local Mayoress, with help from the Special Employment Centre Aidemar, has planted three olive trees in the garden on Avenida del Puerto in honour of World Environment Day (Saturday June 5).
The Aidemar association has been in charge of maintaining the park for over ten years and their collaboration has helped make this symbolic plantation possible.
Other projects which the Town Hall has coordinated for World Environment Day in the past include increasing green areas within the municipality and planting various pine forests.
“Un Árbol Por Europa”, which translates to ‘A tree for Europe’, aims to promote urban sustainability by planting trees, and the initiative was first proposed by the president of the European Parliament, David Sassoli.
A total of 17 Autonomous Communities and 615 Town Halls have participated in the campaign so far, planting over 25,000 trees between them.
The purpose of planting these trees is to raise awareness about the importance of local sustainability in the global environment and, in addition, the project aims to encourage young people to take part in making decisions about their local natural environment.
