ARCHIVED - Santiago de Compostela launches recycling system with prize draw incentives; RECICLOS
Residents can gain points for recycling prize draws or to finance improvement projects in local neighbourhoods
This is the first time the system has been used in the region of Galicia.
The capital city of Galicia, Santiago de Compostela, has launched a new recycling project which provides incentives to try and persuade residents to recycle more, incentivising residents to trade in recycled bottles and cans in return for points to enter into draws or to finance improvement projects in local neighbourhoods.
The system will work through a mobile app, allowing residents to scan any bottles or cans that they consume using a QR code, which will be available on all yellow bins throughout the city of Santiago de Compostela.
This recycling project is already in place in 11 Spanish regions, but this will be the first time the system is used in Galicia. The model is a continuation of the recycling efforts already in place and aims to reward those who contribute.
The first improvement project to be financed by this system will take place in the Santa Marta neighbourhood. Although this area already has gardens and greenery, the idea is to condition the area to allow leisure activities, according to a representative from the Environmental department of Santiago.
Furthermore, Santiago de Compostela is to serve as a trail run for the system in order to then expand the initiative into other municipalities.
As well as using the points obtained to fund neighbourhood projects, residents can also opt to participate in draws, which include prizes such as local products or electric scooters.
