ARCHIVED - Saucy music video filmed for Atheist song in Spanish cathedral
Archbishop of Toledo apologises for letting the ‘Ateo’ (Atheist) song video in the city’s cathedral
In what can surely only be put down to a clerical oversight, the Catholic Church in Spain has allowed a suggestive and salacious music video to be filmed in Toledo Cathedral for the song ‘Ateo’ (meaning ‘Atheist’ in Spanish) by rapper C Tangana and singer Nathy Peluso.
The video features Tangana and Peluso bumping, grinding and doing generally quite un-Christian things to each other in the hallowed grounds of the ancient gothic cathedral while Catholic priests look on longingly from the shadows.
Within hours of the video dropping last Friday morning, the Archbishop of Toledo apologised, saying he “deeply regretted what had happened” even though he claimed to know nothing about the project.
The Church further released a statement reading, “We humbly and sincerely ask for the forgiveness of all the faithful, whether lay people or priests, who have rightly felt wounded by this inappropriate use of a sacred place” and that they would be revising their procedures to “ensure that nothing similar happens again”.
In the same breath, the dean of the cathedral insisted both the song and the video presented “the story of a conversion through human love”, pointing to the chorus, which runs: “I was an atheist, but now I believe, because a miracle like you must have come down from heaven.” He later resigned his role.
This is not the first time in recent weeks that the Catholic Church in Spain has been in hot water after the controversial ex-bishop of Solsona hung up his cassock in exchange for a quiet life with his new partner, a writer of satanic, erotic novels.
