ARCHIVED - Scottish tourist, 33, found dead in Spanish hotel room
The young Airdrie man was on holiday in Mallorca with friends
Avid football fan Barry Horn, aged 33, was on holiday in Mallorca with his friends when he was discovered dead in his hotel room on August 30, and his bereft family are still waiting for answers about what happened.
The Airdrie man was staying in Santa Ponsa with his pals and had planned to venture to one of the hotspot’s famous Celtic bars to watch the Old Firm on September 1, but tragedy struck just two days before.
The cause of his untimely death, and the full circumstances surrounding it, haven’t been released by the Spanish authorities and his loved ones are left waiting for the results of a post-mortem.
Barry’s cousin, 35-year-old Donna Collins, told the local press that the main concern now is bringing the young man’s body back to the UK.
“We’re still in shock. He went over for a week to meet friends and they were going to watch the Celtic v Rangers match on the Saturday,” she said.
“He was looking forward to being in the atmosphere over there and really looking forward to the holiday.
“We don’t know a thing about what happened, including the circumstances before his death and the results of the post-mortem. We feel left in the dark at the moment.
“As a family, we’re trying to look for answers and we are concentrating on getting him home.”
Barry’s family has started a fundraiser to help pay for the funeral costs and the British Embassy in Spain is reportedly assisting them to navigate the process.
Donna added: “We want to give him the best send-off that we can. We need to wait for the post-mortem to come through before we can move forward with plans to get him home.
“We’re not coping very well. We’re just desperate to bring him back.”
