ARCHIVED - September 25: 9-kilometre Romeria de San Miguel in the hills above Calasparra
An enjoyable hike with superb mountain views in the countryside outside Calasparra
A Romería is essentially a religious activity, but over time they have become very popular family and communal activities, combining a healthy walk in the country, plenty of neighbourly fellowship, shared food and drink and the transfer of the figure of person of religious importance from one location to another.
In the case of the annual Romería de San Miguel in Calasparra participants walk to the small chapel of San Miguel in the hills, where Mass is held before they head back down into the town.
The route is about 9km long and is fairly easy but the chapel hermitage is on top of a hill high above the town, so a fair amount of climbing and ascent is involved. Both locals and visitors are made welcome, and the climb is worth it for the stunning views!
Stout walking shoes are recommended, and it's advisable to carry a snack food and water in a light rucksack. Sun cream may also be needed. A staff or walking stick is also extremely useful as some of the paths can be quite loose underfoot.
Refreshments will be served to all those taking part when they reach the chapel.
Anyone wishing to take part should be alongside the Tanatorio on the northern edge of Calasparra (click for map) at 9.00 in the morning as this is where the route begins. Booking is required but participation is free of charge.
