ARCHIVED - Series of earthquakes in the north-west of the Murcia region
The tremors are mainly in Moratalla and Caravaca de la Cruz, although there was a single tremor in Calasparra
In the last 24 hour period a series of minor tremors have been registered in the Region of Murcia by the National Geographic Institute which has measuring equipment installed along fault lines and in areas where seismic activity is habitual all over Spain.
There are generally dozens of minor tremors every week, most of which are imperceptible to humans and most of the tremors go un-noticed other than by the scientific instruments used by the researchers.
Most of this series of tremors were close to the Almería border in a mountainous area which is included within both the Moratalla and Caravaca de la Cruz municipalities a good distance away from the main urban areas, so although the tremors were recorded in these two municipalities, there was no material damage reported.
The first tremor in Calasparra measured 1.5 mbLg and was not perceptible to humans. This was followed by six earthquakes in Moratalla, with magnitudes between 1.5 and 2.7 degrees. The strongest occurred at half six in the morning and had its epicenter only one kilometer below the surface; as this was such a shallow depth, the tremor was perceptible.
Two tremors were also recorded in Caravaca, although these only measured 1.5 and 1.8.
The last of the eleven tremors registered so far in the Region within the latest 24 hour period occurred at 11.10 am in Moratalla with a magnitude of 2.5.
