ARCHIVED - Seven Alicante youths arrested for brutally beating a homeless man
The Spaniards attacked the man with sticks before robbing him in an Alicante suburb
The National Police in Alicante have arrested seven young Spanish people, aged between 18 and 34 years, for savagely beating and robbing a Russian man in an area where groups of homeless people usually congregate at night.
Several eyewitnesses contacted the emergency services and gave clear descriptions of the perpetrators, as well as the two vehicles they used to flee the scene. Consequently, officers closed off the roads in the area and tracked the seven aggressors to the Juan XXIII neighbourhood. Given the number of suspects, reinforcements were called in from other local police units, and the seven were arrested.
According to the witnesses, the attackers knocked the homeless man to the ground with a punch to the face before repeatedly kicking him and beating him with sticks. The Russian man suffered several injuries including fractured ribs and is currently being treated at the General Hospital of Alicante.
Officials believe the attack was motivated by robbery, as the victim was carrying two mobile phones at the time of the assault.
