ARCHIVED - Seven deaths a month on Valencia roads in 2021
Despite the high death toll on the Costa Blanca, there were fewer fatalities than prior to the pandemic in 2019
A total of 83 people died on roads in the Valencia region in 2021, but whilst the figure represents an average of seven a month, there were 16 fewer fatalities last year than in 2019, prior to the coronavirus pandemic.
The latest data for 2021 released by the General Directorate of Traffic (DGT) shows that road deaths in Spain fell in all autonomous communities compared to two years earlier, except in Andalucia, the Balearic Islands, Cantabria, Castilla-La Mancha and Navarre.
And, in fact, the Valencia Community recorded the third-highest reduction in road traffic fatalities in the country last year.
According to the DGT, 2021 closed with 1,004 deaths following accidents on interurban roads in Spain, which is the best year historically, only behind 2020 when 870 people died, although that year mobility was significantly reduced due to the pandemic and anti-Covid measures.
In absolute terms, the highest increase in deaths was in Castile-La Mancha, with 17 more than in 2019, ahead of Andalucia (12 more), the Balearic Islands (+10), Cantabria (+4) and Navarre (+3).
Amongst those with lower figures, Catalonia leads the table with 40 fewer deaths than in 2019, followed by Madrid with 25 fewer, the Valencia region (-16) and Aragon (-13).
Last month, the DGT revealed that seven speed cameras in Alicante and the rest of the region are amongst the most lucrative in Spain, and recently offered tips for driving in adverse weather conditions.
