ARCHIVED - Seville horse carriage rider thrown off and badly injured
The carriage driver has been hospitalised with “serious leg injuries” after losing control of his horse
A horse driver from Seville who drives one of the city’s emblematic horse carriages was hospitalised yesterday, Tuesday April 26, with serious leg injuries after he fell to the ground when he lost control of the horse pulling his carriage.
According to the emergency services of the Seville City Council, the incident occurred on Tuesday afternoon in the Plaza de la Virgen de los Reyes in the city centre.
Doctors from the public health emergency company EPES 061 assisted the injured man, evacuating him to a nearby hospital.
Taking a ride around the city on a horse carriage is a must for many tourists visiting Seville, but in the past animal rights group PETA has slammed this tradition as cruel because it forces the horses to pull oversized loads in all weather and dodge traffic.
“They may develop respiratory ailments because they breathe in exhaust fumes,” they say, “and they can suffer debilitating leg problems from walking on hard surfaces.”
