ARCHIVED - Slight rise in Covid incidence rate across Spain with 10,814 new cases and 132 further fatalities
Catalunya re-enters the extreme risk zone along with 6 other regions
Hopes that a downward trend in coronavirus infections might be starting in Spain following the minimal decrease in the overall incidence rate on Wednesday were dashed by the publication of the Ministry of Health’s latest update on Thursday, with the 14-day rate rising again very slightly to 232.55 cases per 100,000 inhabitants.
The region of Catalunya rejoined the list of those in which the figure is above the “extreme risk” threshold, reporting a figure of 256, along with the Basque Country (514), Navarra (417), Madrid (399), Aragón (268), La Rioja (257) and Andalucía (251). At the other end of the scale, meanwhile, the lowest rate remains in the Comunidad Valenciana, as it has been for over a month, at 40.1, and the figures are below 100 in the Balearics (59), Murcia (66) and Galicia (93).
Another worry is that the number of new cases confirmed in the latest bulletin was again over 10,000 at 10,814 – although this could in part be due to a correction of previous data related to the Basque Country – while a further 132 Covid-related fatalities take the official Ministry death toll since the pandemic reached Spain to 77,496.
Despite this, though, there was another minor improvement in the situation in hospitals across the country, with 59 fewer Covid patients receiving hospital care. There are still over 10,000 beds occupied by coronavirus sufferers, though, representing 7.99 per cent of all capacity, while in intensive care units the proportion is far higher at 22.6 per cent and figures of over 40 per cent are reported in Madrid and the north African enclave of Ceuta.
