ARCHIVED - Catch The Tiger campaign and anti-seagull measures in Cartagena
The tiger mosquito is being targeted in Isla Plana and La Azohía

The anti-tiger mosquito campaign is new to Cartagena this year and has been devised following the annoyance caused by the insect in Mazarrón last year. Within the municipality of Cartagena the species has been found to be most common towards the west, especially in Isla Plana and La Azohía, and in response leaflets are being distributed throughout this area to inform locals about the problem and encourage them to report sightings.
The preventive measures recommended include advice that any accumulation of water, no matter how small, can be used by the Aedes albopictus as a breeding ground, and the CSIC is setting up a “Catch the tiger” (Atrapa el tigre) application which will make it possible to report the presence of the mosquito to the authorities immediately.
The measures to limit the number of seagulls in the city of Cartagena, on the other hand, have been in place for a number of years, and numbers have successfully been brought under control. The methods to be used between now and 30th June include drilling eggs without disturbing nests, the removal of eggs and chicks and the capture and culling of birds where necessary. Spray repellents are also used to dissuade gulls from nesting in certain areas.
Last year some 200 seagulls were captured, and this year the collaboration of members of the public will once again be a crucial element of the campaign: nesting sites should be reported as soon as possible, by telephone on 968 128957 or by email to controlplagas@ayto-cartagena.es. The same phone number is also to be used for reports of pigeon nests.
Members of the public are also asked to collaborate by not throwing away food in public parks and squares, not feeding the seagulls, closing rubbish containers and placing obstacles on rooftops where nests have been built in the past.
