ARCHIVED - Spain Covid update August 15: 2,719 fatalities in a month despite decreasing infections
Although the spread of the virus has been curbed, the pandemic continues to take its toll across Spain

Communities in Spain have reported 2,719 more deaths from Covid in the last month, despite the fact that the spread of the virus has been slowed, which has caused the incidence in those over 60 years of age to fall by almost 1,000 points, to 283 cases. In addition, hospital occupancy currently stands at 4.6%, less than half what it was on July 12.
Incidence rate and coronavirus infections
On June 14, coronavirus infections across Spain exploded and this trend wasn’t reversed until July 12. Since then, a general decline has been reported and in the last month, the 14-day cumulative incidence rate has fallen from 1,255 cases per 100,000 inhabitants to just 283.3 in the last health report published by the Ministry of Health on Friday August 12.
The total number of infections recorded in Spain since the beginning of the coronavirus pandemic has now risen to 13,294,139.
Those over 80 years of age have the highest level of risk of contagion, with an incidence of 439.04 cases, followed by septuagenarians (289.45), while the lowest level of transmission recorded is that of those in their sixties (197.79). The incidence rate in all of these age groups has steadily declined in recent days.
The 7-day incidence also continues to decline, going from 134 cases to 107 which indicates that the number of infections should continue to drop in the coming days.
Andalucia continues to be the community with the lowest incidence rate by far, a trend which it has maintained throughout the seventh wave (145.32 cases). Every region has now dropped below the 800-case threshold.
Hospitalisations and fatalities
In addition, since last July 12, hospital pressure has gone from 10.5% to 4.6%.
A month ago there were 12,789 patients admitted for Covid in Spanish hospitals, while today there are 5,402 patients, of which 369 are being treated for more serious conditions in ICUs, compared to 501 in mid-July, which generate an occupation of 4.3% (down from 5.7% before).
According to the Ministry of Health, 236 Covid-related fatalities have been reported in the last week, bringing the overall death toll since the start of the health crisis to 111,667.
Vaccination data
As of August 15, 92.8% of the population over the age of 12 is fully vaccinated against Covid, which means that a total of 39,139,014 people have now received two doses.
So far, 39,254,922 have received at least one dose, 93.1% of the population over 12 years of age.
This percentage drops to 54.5% of the population when talking about the third booster dose, which has been administered to 25,824,667 people.
