ARCHIVED - Spain designs largest artificial beach in Europe on outskirts of Madrid
Spain’s new saltwater beach will feature a variety of water sports, slides, bars and restaurants
Madrid is a favourite destination for both Spanish and international holidaymakers, with its wide variety of cultural attractions and a cosmopolitan atmosphere, but the temperatures can reach sweltering heights in the summer and many locals flee the heat of the city for the cooler coast.
This shortfall is soon to be remedied, however, as the Spanish capital is about to become home to the largest urban beach in Europe: Alovera Beach, located just 52.7 kilometres from the capital city in Guadalajara.
In the coming days, the municipal council in Alovera is set to approve the public tender for the works, which will include 21,000 square metres of water surrounded by almost 17,000 square metres of beach.

Not only will the impressive complex have a choice of beach bars and restaurants where visitors can enjoy a waterside cocktail or cool drink, but Alovera Beach aims to become a benchmark for outdoor water activities, with a sports school for sailing, paddle boarding and kayaking, as well as a zip line and beach volleyball courts.
This is all in addition to the many fun slides and play areas designed to keep the whole family entertained. The much-anticipated saltwater beach is set to be open for business in 2023.
The extensive project will have an initial budget of 15.6 million euros, will create around 350 direct and indirect jobs and welcome between 250,000 and 400,000 visitors each year.
