Spain is through to the World Cup final - could it be a Spain-England final?

ARCHIVED ARTICLE -

Celebrations erupted across Spain as La Roja beat France 2-0 to book their place in Sunday's World Cup final, now attention turns to England's semi-final against Argentina

Spain is through to the World Cup final - could it be a Spain-England final?

Spain is through to the 2026 FIFA World Cup final after beating France 2-0, with celebrations breaking out across the country as fans now wait to see whether England or Argentina will be standing in the way of a second World Cup title.

People watched the match in bars, restaurants, at home and at the giant screens set up by town halls in many towns and cities across Spain.

As soon as the final whistle blew, the celebrations began. Car horns sounded through the streets, Spanish flags appeared from balconies and car windows, and people headed to their local plazas to celebrate late into the night.

Spain puts in another impressive performance

France went into the semi-final as one of the favourites to win the tournament, with big names including Kylian Mbappé, Ousmane Dembélé and Michael Olise in the starting line-up.

But Spain once again showed why they have been one of the strongest teams at this year's World Cup.

Luis de la Fuente's side looked comfortable throughout much of the game, staying organised in defence and making the most of their chances going forward.

Mikel Oyarzabal opened the scoring from the penalty spot before Pedro Porro added a second after the break to send Spain into only the second World Cup final in the country's history.

Once again, it wasn't about one player stealing the headlines. Spain's strength came from the way the team worked together, making it difficult for France to find a way back into the match. That said, there were some standout performances, with Rodri putting in an absolute masterclass in midfield.

The Royal Family celebrates too

Spain's Royal Family was among the millions watching the semi-final.

King Felipe VI, Queen Letizia, Princess Leonor and Infanta Sofía watched the match together, celebrating both goals before hugging as Spain reached the final.

After the match, the Royal Household shared a video of the family celebrating along with a message congratulating the team.

"Spain is in the final! Once again, you've shown why you're one of the world's great national teams. Now, with an entire country behind you, it's time to fight for the title. Thank you for making us enjoy this journey. Go for it!"

Could England be waiting?

Spain will now head to the MetLife Stadium in New Jersey for Sunday's World Cup final, where they will play the winners of Wednesday's semi-final between England and Argentina.

England are hoping to reach their first World Cup final since 1966, while Spain are looking to win the tournament for the second time after lifting the trophy in South Africa in 2010.

If England beat Argentina, Sunday's final will see two European teams go head-to-head for football's biggest prize. If Argentina come through instead, Spain will take on the current world champions.

For now though, Spain can enjoy another memorable night. One game remains, and the dream of a second World Cup title is now just one win away.
