ARCHIVED - Spain maintains entry restrictions of non-EU and Schengen nationals until March 31
In the same BOE the closure of the Portuguese frontier with Spain has been extended until March 16
This order relates to non-essential travel by residents of countries from non-EU and Schengen border countries with just a handful of negotiated exceptions.
The Official State Gazette (BOE) published on Friday February 26 includes an extension of the temporary restriction of non-essential travel from third countries to the European Union and Schengen associated countries in order to avoid an increase in infections by Covid-19 until March 31st.
Initially, the restrictions were to end on January 28. However, the Interior Minister, Fernando Grande-Marlaska extended the measures until February and today a new extension has appeared until March 31.
The list of countries whose residents are not affected by the restrictions was drawn up based on the European recommendation of June 30. This list has been modified on successive occasions to adapt the list of third countries to the epidemiological circumstances.
The last modification was the exclusion of Japan from the list on January 28.
Thus, the third countries and special administrative regions whose residents are not affected by the temporary restriction of non-essential travel to the EU are Australia, New Zealand, Rwanda, Singapore, South Korea, Thailand, China and Hong Kong.
In the same BOE of February 25, the extension of the closure of the borders with Portugal until March 16 is published. "Despite the improvement in the epidemiological situation in Spain and Portugal and the relaxation of some of the restrictive internal mobility measures, these still have a considerable impact, which recommends maintaining controls on the internal land border between both countries, with the same limitations applied until now ”, the BOE states.
NB; Please note that for travellers from the UK there are now specific excpetions for those who are in the process of obtaining residency and for Spanish residents. This particular set of restrictions is in place until March 16. Click here for details
