ARCHIVED - Spain one of four countries testing Pfizer vaccine on children aged 5 to 12
Altogether, 4,644 children aged between 5 and 12 are taking part in the clinical trials, 557 of them in the Galicia region of Spain.
The clinical trial in children under 12 years of age using the Pfizer vaccine against Covid-19 started in Santiago de Compostela (Galicia) on Monday, with 25 children aged between 5 and 12 due to be given injections this week. Later stages intend to also include younger children and babies over six months old.
Altogether there will be 557 children taking part in the trial in Galicia, which consists of a ‘double blind’ study whereby some patients receive the vaccine and others a placebo, at Santiago’s Hospital Clinico, the only hospital in the region included in the test phase.
Spain is taking part in the clinical trials to further evaluate the safety, tolerability and immunogenicity of the Pfizer vaccine in healthy children along with the US, Finland and Poland, accounting for 557 of the 4,644 children involved.
There will be a follow-up period of two years and the children’s parents have been given electronic diaries to record any changes to the youngsters’ health.
