ARCHIVED - Spain removes all restrictions at airports
From Friday, people will be allowed inside airports in Spain to greet or say goodbye to their loved ones
A full year and a half after the coronavirus pandemic began, family and friends will once again be allowed to enter airports in Spain to see off and greet their loved ones in the arrivals and departure halls. The Council of Ministers agreed at the beginning of the week to eliminate the restrictions at Spanish airports, and from Friday October 15 those not travelling themselves will also be able to enter the terminals. Masks will still be required at all times.
The measure will be published in the Official Gazette on Thursday but the Minister of Transport, Mobility and Urban Agenda, Raquel Sanchez, has warned that it will not be a free-for-all, indicating that "the access of companions to the airport terminals will be allowed, although their entry may be limited in times of great influx to avoid overcrowding.”
The elimination of this restriction is an important move towards normality and reflects the positive evolution of the pandemic here in Spain, where the all-important cumulative incidence rate has dropped into the low risk level to stand at 46.08 cases per 100,000 inhabitants.
On July 7 2020, a decree was published reducing access to the interior of AENA’s 46 airports in Spain, whereby only passengers holding a valid boarding pass could enter the terminals within six hours of their flight. As an exception, minors and people with reduced mobility were allowed to have companions, while of course those working at the airport, as well as personnel from the security forces, were permitted entry.
Masks here to stay
The Minister of Health, Carolina Darias, made it clear this week that there are no immediate plans to eliminate the use of masks or the requirement to socially distance. A government spokesperson reiterated on Monday that masks have proven to be the most effective non-pharmacological measure against coronavirus, and that their use will be maintained for some time yet.
