ARCHIVED - Spain withdraws bid for 2030 Winter Olympics
Spain has turned its attention to the 2043 Games instead
The president of the Spanish Olympic Committee (COE), Alejandro Blanco, has called a press conference for 7pm on Tuesday June 21 where he is expected to announce Spain’s withdrawal of the candidacy to host the 2030 Winter Olympic Games.
The process has been plagued with discord from the outset, with the Government of Aragon continually sparring with Catalonia over the logistics of the joint bid. Given the discord, the Spanish government and the COE have ruled out participating in the race and have instead turned their attention to a bid for the 2034 Games. Sources haven’t confirmed if Aragon will be included in the next round, but it seems likely that Spain’s next punt for the Olympics will gravitate towards the Catalan territory.
The candidacy for the 2030 Games was definitively ruled out last week, once all negotiations between Aragon, the COE and Catalonia had failed. The Spanish government did suggest overruling Aragon and holding the competition solely in the Catalan Community, but Mr Blanco dismissed this option.
The president has spent months negotiating between the two regions in an attempt to secure the 2030 bid, and several sources indicate that he may not be ready to throw in the towel just yet. However, the clock is ticking and as the COE is the only entity that can present a candidacy to the International Olympic Committee (IOC), it is almost certainly too late to expect Catalonia to Aragon to reach an agreement.
