ARCHIVED - Spain Covid update September 15: cumulative incidence rate continues to fall
The coronavirus incidence rate in Spain is fast approaching 100 cases per 100,000 inhabitants
According to the latest data released by the Ministry of Health in Spain on Wednesday September 15, the cumulative incidence rate over a 14-day period has once again fallen to sit at 101.55 cases per 100,000 inhabitants, down from 109.38 on Tuesday, representing a decrease of more than 50 points in just a week. If the current trend continues, Spain could very shortly move into the low-risk category at which point the World Health Organisation (WHO) considers the pandemic to be under control.
The positive evolution of the fifth wave is reflected throughout Europe and the rest of the world, with global cases of Covid-19 in the week between September 6 and 12 falling by 13%, the first significant decrease recorded in the last two months.
By regions, Asturias continues to have the lowest incidence rate at 35.73 followed by the Valencian Community (70.67) and the Canary Islands (77.07).
Crucially, the 14-day rate is declining in those aged between 12 and 19, dropping from 140 cases to 124.10 in the past 24 hours as the vaccination campaign continues.
Coronavirus infections
On Wednesday, 3,723 new cases of Covid were registered, with 1,762 diagnosed in the last 24 hours. This is a slight increase compared to Tuesday (1,715) and brings the total number of infections since the beginning of the pandemic to 4,922,249.
Hospitalisations and Fatalities
There are currently 4,425 patients admitted for Covid-19 throughout Spain, 34 fewer than on Tuesday, with 1,097 being treated in the ICU (down 39), while 529 people have been discharged from hospital in the past 24 hours. This brings the occupancy rate down in both general hospital beds and the intensive care units, to 3.7% and 12% respectively.
Ninety more Covid-related deaths were registered on Wednesday, bringing the total death toll in Spain to 85,638 people.
Vaccination data
Throughout Spain, 75% of the population have now been vaccinated, representing 35,571,661 people and 78.6% or 37,303,303 people have received at least one dose.
