ARCHIVED - Spain Covid update September 27: all pandemic indicators fall over the weekend
Spain is now ranked among the top five countries in Europe for vaccinations
Spain is rapidly approaching a vaccination rate of 80% for those with at least one Covid jab, placing it in the top four countries in Europe in terms of the vaccine campaign, and the latest data from the Ministry of Health on Monday September 27 show that all of the other coronavirus indicators have continued their sharp decline over the weekend.
Cumulative incidence rate
The 14-day incidence in Spain has fallen to 65.42 cases per 100,000 inhabitants, down from 69 on Friday and a significant decrease on the 83.43 cases recorded last Monday, down more than 14 points.
For the past number of weeks, Asturias has been the region taking the most firm control over the fifth wave of the pandemic and now stands at just 17 cases per 100,000. However, all of the autonomous communities are following a similar trend, with Galicia (37), Castilla y Leon (43) and the Community of Valencia (50.54) coming next in line. Even the Spanish enclaves of Ceuta and Melilla in northern Africa, which have been lagging behind the rest of Spain, have seen a notable decrease in this figure, registering 130 and 143 cases per 100,000 inhabitants respectively this Monday.
The 7-day incidence rate remains well below half of the two week figure also, indicating that this positive movement is likely to continue over the next number of days.
Those aged under 11 years now have almost double the incidence rate of the next age bracket, 12 to 19 year olds, with primary schools in several communities in Spain considering vaccinating these youngsters before the year is out.
Coronavirus infections
A total of 5,039 new Covid cases were reported in Spain in the last 24 hours, down from 5,988 on the same day last week. This figure brings the total number of infections since the beginning of the pandemic to 4,951,640.
Between September 17 and 23, a total of 621,033 PCR and antigen tests were carried out, representing 1,320,61 per 100,000 inhabitants.
Meanwhile, the positivity rate stands at 3.17%, now well below the 5% threshold set by the World Health Organisation (WHO) to indicate that the spread of the virus is “controlled.”
Hospitalisations
There are currently 2,867 people admitted for Covid throughout Spain (down from 2,951 on Friday), giving an overall occupancy rate of 2.39%. The number of patients being treated in ICUs has also decreased to 805, representing an 8.87% occupancy. In addition, 164 people have been discharged from hospital in the last 24 hours.
Fatalities
Sadly, 134 people have died from coronavirus in Spain in the last 7 days, 69 of whom passed away in the last 24 hours. This is down from 118 fatalities recorded last Monday, and brings the total death toll since the beginning of the pandemic to 86,298.

As of Monday, 36,447,564 people or 76.8% of the population of Spain are fully immunised against Covid while 79.3% or 37,612,369 people have received at least one dose.
Only Portugal (81.44%), Malta (81.08%) and Iceland (79.27%) are ahead of Spain in terms of administering two doses of the vaccination.
