ARCHIVED - Spain ups the tempo of Covid vaccination as 3 million doses arrive this week
The Spanish government hopes to provide a first dose to 90 per cent of 20 to 29 year olds by mid-August
Having received promises of large batches of coronavirus vaccines over the coming month from Pfizer, Moderna and Hanssen, the Ministry of Health in Spain is now anticipating that by the middle of August as many as 90 per cent of those aged between 20 and 29 will have received at least one dose.
This week alone a total of 3 million vaccine doses are to be distributed to regional health services, comprising 1.7 million from Pfizer, 948,000 from Moderna and 230,000 from Janssen. Precise data are not yet available for August, frustrating attempts to plan ahead at regional level, but as a result of the latest deliveries Alfredo González, the head of Salud Digital, expects that by the end of July the figure of 90 per cent could have been reached in the 30-39 age group (as of Tuesday it stood at 61.8 per cent as opposed to 42.5 per cent the day before).
By age groups, the proportions of the population to have received full vaccination are as follows (according to government data published on July 27):
Age 12-19: 1.9 per cent
Age 20-29: 15.1 per cent
Age 30-39: 31 per cent
Age 40-49: 73.4 per cent
Age 50-59: 87.4 per cent
Age 60-69: 88.1 per cent
Age 70-79: 98 per cent
Age 80+: 100 per cent
