ARCHIVED - Spanish central government excludes Mar Menor from 2022 budget
Over 340 million euros are being allocated for submarines in Cartagena, Murcia
The recently released Budget plan for 2022 reveals that the national government has not allocated a single cent towards saving the Mar Menor, which is in an incredibly fragile state as nitrate-laden agricultural run-off continues to contaminate the salt-water lagoon.
Despite a total of 465.5 million euros being allocated to the Region of Murcia next year, no funds have been earmarked to help return the Mar Menor to its former glory, which leads to uncertainty about who will provide funding and what exactly is going to be done to save the lake.
On the other hand, the Ministry of Defence has not been shy about throwing money at Murcia and has allocated 349.2 million for the execution of the S-80 series of Navy submarines at the Navantia shipyard in Cartagena.
The Ministry of Transport, Mobility and Urban Agenda is giving 73.8 million euros to the Region to improve the transport system, which will include adding a third lane to the A-7 motorway.
Other Ministries who have destined significant amounts to Murcia are: Ministry of Ecological Transition and Demographic Challenge, Ministry of Justice, Ministry of Sports and Culture and Ministry of Interior.
