ARCHIVED - Spanish Government reiterates that now is not the time for marches as Women’s day approaches
No members of the national government will be attending these events they insist
Various feminist collectives and other groups in Spain continue to insist that they will hold demonstrations in the streets on Monday 8th March to mark International Women’s Day, but the national government is firmly opposed to such plans and maintains that no member of the government will be “breaking ranks” to attend any of the events.
Last year mass gatherings on Women’s Day were held largely responsible for the sudden surge in Covid infection which is now, in hindsight, referred to as the “first wave”, but this year the government warns that “this is not the time” for mass meetings and demonstrations in support of equal opportunities.
Nonetheless, the central government delegation in Madrid, where the current coronavirus incidence rate is higher than in any other region in the country, has authorized gatherings of up to 500 people.
