ARCHIVED - Spanish man throws nearly 50,000 euros in a dumpster on purpose and neighbours call the police
An investigation has been launched to find out where so much money came from and why the man put it in a recycling bin
An unusual story unfolded early on Monday morning, June 6, in the Spanish locality of Valladolid when a man carrying a bag was seen literally throwing fistfuls of 50-euro banknotes into a large rubbish container.
Two people who witnessed the scene called police, who turned up swiftly and confirmed that at the base of the container, which fortunately was empty, were dozens of fifty-euro notes, which they promptly removed and took into evidence, along with the dustbin.
After collecting all the money in a bag and counting it, it was discovered that there were a total of 46,645 euros in different banknotes, no less than 969, mostly fifty euros (919). The rest (50) were 20s and 5s.
While waiting for a judge to decide in due course what to do with the money, police tried to figure out who would throw such a large amount of money into a recycling bin.
One of the witnesses who saw what happened informed officers that the owner, or at least the man who threw the banknotes in the trashcan, was a local man known to suffer from psychiatric problems.
Other witnesses confirmed that this was the case.
The man has now been identified and the 46,645 euros remains in police custody.
“The money will be handed over to the corresponding judge, its origin and the way in which it was found will be investigated so that the court can decide what to do with it,” said police sources.
The nearly 1,000 banknotes recovered from the container only remained inside for a few minutes thanks to a tip-off from the first witness, who alerted the police at around 9am.
