Cartagena, Alicante and seven major Andalusian ports set to modernise, boost connectivity and sustainability through 2029
Spain’s busiest ports are getting a major facelift thanks to a wave of government investment aimed at future-proofing trade, jobs and sustainability. The Port of Cartagena stands out, with a €356 million plan running through 2029 to expand infrastructure, improve access and support greener operations.More than two-thirds of this funding will go to new facilities and larger capacity, positioning Cartagena as a Mediterranean hub for trade, livestock exports and agri-food imports. Another €36 million is earmarked for sustainability, including dock electrification to cut noise and emissions, while investment in new port-city projects will improve local life for residents.Alicante’s port will share in the funding, receiving €88.2 million for upgrades to infrastructure, new rail and road access, digitalisation and improved security.Key projects include a modernised rail connection, dock electrification, and a green hydrogen pilot plant, alongside extensions to cruise berths and piers. These investments tie into the Mediterranean Corridor, improving Alicante’s connectivity with wider European networks.Andalucía’s seven strategic ports: Algeciras, Huelva, Cádiz, Málaga, Seville, Almeria and Motril will see a combined €1.3 billion over the next five years. The lion’s share, €620 million, will adapt facilities to new freight needs and tackle future challenges, with €250 million focused squarely on sustainability, such as shore power connections. The Port of Algeciras, leading the group, will see about €520 million, enabling vital rail and road links, new container terminals, and measures to reduce environmental impacts throughout the region. For businesses and residents alike, these upgrades spell more jobs, better local environments, and continued competitiveness for Spain’s bustling port cities. With more ships arriving and cleaner operations underway, the next chapter for Mediterranean port life is set to be bigger, better, and a whole lot greener.Image: wikicommons
