ARCHIVED - Speed assistant device made mandatory in new cars in Spain
The ISA system uses a camera to detect speed limits on roads in Spain
The year 2022 is set to bring many changes to driving in Spain, with the DGT determined to cut down drastically on the number of fatalities and serious injuries on our roads. Among these changes is the requirement of all new European cars to be equipped as standard with various driving assistants.
Speeding contributes to a huge number of accidents in Spain and throughout Europe, which is why, as of this year, new vehicles will have to be installed with a speed assist device known as the ISA system. As its name suggests, the equipment is designed to ensure that drivers stick to the speed limits and maintain a constant and safe velocity.
How does the ISA system work?
First and foremost, the kit makes use of a centrally located camera in the vehicle – usually mounted on the rear-view mirror – to determine how fast a driver should be going based on the speed limits of the road. When hooked up to a GPS, the ISA can inform the motorist if they have exceeded the limit.
And the system doesn’t just warn motorists if they are travelling too fast: the device can actually slow a car down to the maximum speed level of the road. To ensure safety, the ISA won’t try to brake the vehicle but instead adjusts the engine revolutions to maintain a constant allowed speed.
It is worth noting that the ISA system can easily be disabled by drivers, either by tapping on the accelerator to override the device or pushing the ‘off’ button located on the passenger side of the car.
Optional settings
Drivers can choose from three options when using the ISA
- Informational: the system will inform the driver if he is speeding
- Warning: the system will inform the driver if he is speeding and a light amount of pressure will be felt on the accelerator pedal
- Mandatory: this level prevents the car totally from exceeding the speed limit.
