ARCHIVED - Supermarket shopping prices in Spain increase by 21 per cent
The experts believe the cost of basic products will continue to rise in Spain
Electricity prices in Spain have reached an all-time high and, coupled with the increased cost of fuel and natural gas, have hiked up the Consumer Price Index (CPI) significantly this year, a fact that is reflected in practically every area. In fact, the National Institute of Statistics (INE) has revealed in its latest report the rise in housing (18%), transport (10.8%), hospitality (2.5%) and also in food (3%).
According to the Organisation of Consumers and Users (OCU), this “exorbitant increase” has raised basic products such as pasta, meat, milk and eggs by 21.2%.
The OCU has analysed the behaviour of prices over the last six months and confirmed that 23 basic items in shopping baskets have risen in cost. In products that have seen a price drop, the amount is negligible, and “tends to be lower than the increases”.
The analysts found that margarine and pasta suffered the most significant increase at a staggering 20%, while milk, eggs, beef, chicken and lamb all rose in price by more than 10%.
Of the 23 products studies, only shaving foam and apples (-3.1%), along with carrots (-9.9%) have dropped in price, with the experts warning that this upward trend will persist as long as energy and fuel costs continue to increase.
