ARCHIVED - Suspect arrested for holiday rental scam in Valencia region and Murcia
The suspect tricked holidaymakers out of thousands of euro for non-existent apartments in Valencia
The National Police in Valencia have arrested a 67-year-old man for allegedly scamming more than 300 people throughout Spain by taking bookings for holiday rentals that didn’t belong to him. According to police sources, the suspect used photos from well-known rental sites and charged his victims hefty deposits for apartments that they would never get to stay in. Operating mainly in the Gandia, Calpe and Denia areas of the Valencian Community, the man was found to have several different back accounts which he would ask his victims to deposit money to.
The investigation began at the beginning of March when one victim reported being scammed out of €500 to reserve accommodation for his holiday. The National Police managed to identify two suspects, one of whom had several similar complaints made against him in Madrid as far back as 2018.
Their investigation led them to a holiday complex in Valencia where the suspect was hiding out. In addition to his arrest, officers found various incriminating documents and around €35,000 in cash, which the police established came from his rental scams between January and July this year.
