ARCHIVED - Temperatures set to drop this weekend: Spain weather forecast June 17-19
A DANA storm should cause the mercury to dip across Spain by Sunday June 19
The entire country has been suffering from the sweltering temperatures of this June’s heatwave, which is expected to continue until Saturday June 18 in most areas. However, a significant change will occur after this, bringing this very unusual weather episode to an end.
A DANA brewing close to the Azores Islands could trigger a dramatic drop in temperatures from Sunday June 19 if it hits the Spanish Peninsula as expected; but, these storms by their very nature are unpredictable and Aemet warns that a cooler spell is by no means guaranteed.
If all goes to plan, a storm will form in the Bay of Biscay late on Saturday “with cold air approaching our territory.” It will gradually remove the haze from the Mediterranean coast and create a good deal of rain in the northwest of the country, but for the rest of Spain the weather should remain stable, though considerably cooler.
Friday June 17
The heat is expected to intensify again on Friday, particularly in the north and east, but the vast majority of the country, along with the Balearic and Canary Islands, have been issued with yellow and orange weather warnings for high temperatures.
Maximum temperatures on Friday:
Alicante: 35ºC
Almería: 37ºC
Málaga: 31ºC
Murcia: 39ºC
Saturday June 18
The high temperatures will likely begin to subside on Saturday, starting in the western part of the country along with the Mediterranean coast, with some fain forecast in Asturias, Cantabria and the northern half of Galicia. The mercury will remain high in the eastern part of Spain and the Balearic Islands, however, and several regions, including the Valencian Community, Murcia and parts of Andalucía remain under weather alerts for extreme heat.
Maximum temperatures on Saturday:
Alicante: 34ºC
Almería: 33ºC
Málaga: 31ºC
Murcia: 38ºC
Sunday June 19
Big changes are expected on Sunday, with day-time temperatures forecast to drop between 5 and 10 degrees in many areas, even dipping below the 30ºC mark in Galicia, eastern Andalucía and the Canary Islands.
Maximum temperatures on Sunday:
Alicante: 30ºC
Almería: 31ºC
Málaga: 31ºC
Murcia: 37ºC
