ARCHIVED - Terra Natura Murcia places tracking bands on 5 baby storks
White storks have been nesting in Terra Natura’s enclosure since 2012 and the bands provide more information about these birds and their migration routes
The Terra Natura animal park in Murcia, in collaboration with the Ministry of Water, Agriculture, Farming, Fishing and Environment, has tagged five baby storks to monitor the population in the Region of Murcia, as well as to track their migratory movements and reproduction habits.
The purpose of tagging these members of the stork species is to provide more data to the scientific community about white storks (Ciconia ciconia) and their migratory flow, including any changes in the climate or ecosystems which they usually inhabit. In addition, biometric measurements are also taken when the birds are tagged to monitor the health of the species and its breeding patterns .
Terra Natura Murcia currently has ten white storks, in addition to the five baby storks which were born this year. The park’s employees will continue feeding the growing youngsters by leaving food in nearby areas in order to monitor if the birds remain close to the enclosure or if they decide to travel further afield.
With the identification via bands of these birds, Terra Natura now forms part of the national census of white storks, carried out by SEO Birdlife, which is a non-governmental organization that aims to conserve and study birds and their habitats.
Just over a decade ago, the first group of storks started nesting in the enclosure at Terra Natura and has continued to grow since then, leading to, in 2012, the birth of the first wild stork in the Region of Murcia for over 40 years.
This weekend Terra Natura Murcia moves into summer mode, opening its waterpark for the hotter months of the year.
