ARCHIVED - Terror attack foiled in Spain: five Islamic State members arrested in Barcelona and Madrid
The alleged jihadist group, based in Barcelona, were said to be preparing a terrorist attack
Five people are in prison after a jihadist cell was dismantled in Barcelona and Madrid on Monday October 11. One of them was already in prison and one was being held in an immigration holding pen in Madrid, while the others were in Barcelona. The group was reportedly preparing to carry out a terrorist attack in Spain.
Police have been on the trail of this organised criminal group since January, having been tipped off after the arrest of three other alleged jihadists in Barcelona. Two months after the January operation, investigators found out that the alleged terrorist leader was entering Spain. The other members of the group were identified when their leader, an Islamic State soldier who fought in Syria and Iraq, contacted them upon his arrival in Spain.
During their raid on the Barcelona houses and Madrid centre where the suspects were located, officers from the Policía Nacional found machetes and 9mm calibre ammunition. They also found several objects that were used to illegally forge official documents.
