ARCHIVED - The 24th annual San Javier Jazz Festival will be held in the first three weeks of July 2022
The official poster for the iconic jazz festival and the first artists performing have been revealed
The official poster has been revealed for the much-anticipated 24th San Javier International Jazz Festival, which will be held during the first three weeks of July 2022.
Valladolid illustrator Doctor Juanpa was the artist chosen to design this year’s poster for the famous Jazz Festival, which will be devoted especially to guitar and piano jazz.
The festival will continue to focus on Spanish and European music, with such prestigious names as the great guitarist Steve Vai (Whitesnake, Spinal Tap) making up the programme. As well as this, the festival will feature the band Vintage Trouble, who will play for the first ever time in the Murcia Region, guitarists Peter Bernstein and Mark Whitfield, pianist Emmet Cohen, and the Terrel Stafford and Bruce Barth Trio, with Sara Dowling as guest artist.
San Javier Mayor, José Miguel Luengo, along with the Councillor for Culture and Festival Director, David Martínez; the former Festival Director, Alberto Nieto; and Doctor Juanpa; all presented the poster in San Javier Museum, while giving a preview of the Festival programme which “includes many new features not only among the artists on the programme but also in the parallel activities with more music in the street”.
Specifically, the Festival will bring several free concerts to La Manga del Mar Menor, Santiago de la Ribera and the centre of San Javier and, for the first time ever, “will fill different green and landscaped areas of the municipality with music in these three weeks, giving great prominence to the Conservatory of Music of San Javier and local artists such as the vocalist Dora Helena”.
Alberto Nieto underscored the great names of the five artists that have been unveiled as performing in the festival, including Steve Vai, who considered by many magazines as “one of the 10 best rock guitarists in the world”. He trained with Joe Satriani and Frank Zappa as his mentors, and has now had a career spanning more than 40 years, with 15 million records sold and 3 Grammys. Now he returns to San Javier, where he left an indelible memory five years ago, with his new album ‘Inviolate’.
One of the most surprising performances will be that of Vintage Trouble, an unclassifiable band from Los Angeles, “difficult to describe in words”, who will be making their first performance in Murcia. The group’s own singer describes it as “James Brown singing with Led Zeppelin”, so expect Blues, Rock and Soul to go hand in hand.
Another of the concerts announced was from American guitarists Peter Bernstein and Mark Whitfield, old acquaintances on and off stage, who are visiting San Javier with their own Festival production “We all Remember Wes” in allusion to the great jazz guitarist Wes Montgomery.
Also playing at the 24th annual edition of Jazz San Javier will be trumpeter Terrel Stafford, one of the top contemporary trumpet players after Wynton Marsalis. Vocalist Sara Dowling, one of the UK’s best new musical talents, will be the guest artist in the last part of the concert.
Finally, the Festival announced the participation of pianist Emmet Cohen, who was already on the 2019 programme, which was suspended due to the Covid pandemic, and who we will finally be able to see at Jazz San Javier. At the age of 31, Cohen combines the tradition of American music with the classical jazz of the 70s and 80s, and has won the main prizes and distinctions for pianists in the United States, playing alongside greats such as Benny Colson, Ron Carter, Jimmy Cobb and George Coleman, among others.
The final dates for the festival will be announced at a future date, and tickets will go on sale soon.
