ARCHIVED - The heat returns with a vengeance: 24 Spanish provinces on alert for high temperatures
Wednesday July 20 sees the temperature rise once more across Spain
The president of the Spanish government, Pedro Sánchez, has appealed for “prudence” and “caution” amid the blistering temperatures besieging the country this July, whilst delivering the rather ominous message that there are “more difficult days ahead.”
Spain’s State Meteorological Agency (Aemet) closely echoes these sentiments, issuing no fewer than 24 weather warnings for Wednesday July 20 even though the heatwave is reportedly over.

Five provinces, Córdoba, Huelva, Jaén, Seville and Gran Canaria are all subject to an orange alert, which represents a significant risk from extreme temperatures. The Andalusian regions will easily hit 40ºC, while Córdoba is expected to exceed 42ºC. The thermometers will top out at 37ºC in Gran Canaria.
Meanwhile, a further 19 provinces have been issued a yellow warning: Cádiz, Granada, Huesca, Zaragoza, Mallorca, Ávila, Salamanca, Albacete, Ciudad Real, Cuenca, Guadalajara, Toledo, Gerona, Lérida, Badajoz, Cáceres, Lanzarote, Fuerteventura, La Palma, La Gomera, El Hierro and Tenerife are all expected to see the thermometers hover between 36 and 39ºC in the middle of the day.
In addition, Gran Canaria, Tenerife, El Hierro, La Gomera and La Palma will all be on yellow alert this Wednesday due to force 7 north-easterly coastal winds.
