The Iglesia Nuestra Señora del Rosario in La Unión
This is the main parroquial church of La Unión
The main church of La Unión is dedicated to Nuestra Señora del Rosario, and is on Calle del Clavel and the Plaza Casciaro in the eastern part of the town centre.
The main place of worship in La Unión replaced the Ermita Vieja de Herrerías, where services had been held since 1859, at a time when the prosperity brought by mining in the Sierra Minera was at its peak. The first stone was laid in 1894, and the building was eventually consecrated in 1902.
The church was designed by Justo Millán, who was responsible for many other public buildings, both religious and civil, in Albacete and Murcia.
The land on which the church of Nuestra Señora del Rosario stands was donated to La Unión by Román Sánchez and Pedro Casciaro, after whom the square in front of it is named.
Perhaps the most noticeable features on the outside of the church are the dome, which is finished in blue tiles, and the bell-tower on which it stands.
Apart from the main central nave there are two secondary aisles along which side chapels are located. In these chapels are housed the images which are paraded through the streets of La Unión during Easter Week, including the Virgen del Rosario which was sculpted by Carrillo and the Cristo de los Mineros, a figure created by the Valencian sculptor Jeriqué in 1913.
Unfortunately the church of La Unión is not open visitors except during Holy Mass, despite it having been declared an Item of Cultural Interest in 2013.
