ARCHIVED - The Isla Plana road will be closed to traffic until June after dramatic landslide
Repair work to the Cartagena road has already begun, but is expected to continue for over two months
Murcia’s Regional Ministry of Development has announced that it expects the repairs to the RM-E22 road in Cartagena to last more than two months, after the shock landslide that tore a chunk out of the road at kilometre 9.8 near the Cuestas del Cedacero viewpoint, in Cabo Tiñoso this week.
The unrelenting rains in Murcia caused part of the retaining wall by the roadside to collapse on Wednesday, taking with it a portion of the road and creating a sinkhole effect.
Normally, thousands of drivers use this road every day from May to October. But now motorists travelling between Cartagena, La Azohía, Isla Plana and Puerto de Mazarrón along the RM-22 road will have to use the alternative route of the old national N-332 road until the repair work is finished in early June.
Work began yesterday to fix the road, including the building of a new wall forty metres long and almost six metres high to support the road surface, plus extensive construction work to restore the road to its original state. In the meantime, the road has now been closed to all traffic until further notice.
The Regional Ministry has pointed out that this is a “costly and complex” project, but that they will try to carry it out “as quickly as possible” to try to open the RM-E22 to traffic “as soon as possible”. A budget of 248,050 euros has been set aside for the repairs.
